Year 3 Newsletter
Autumn 2009
Cedar and Birch Class

Welcome to Year 3, your teachers are Mrs Pinch in Cedar class and Miss Hopgood in Birch class.

Here are some ideas to help you with your child’s learning in Year 3. We hope to meet you at the parents’ meeting on 16th September where we can discuss the year in more detail.

Our topics for the Autumn term are:

  • Rocks and soils
  • Ancient Greece
  • Pattern in Ancient Greek pottery
  • Signs and Symbols in different religions
  • Characteristics of materials

To support learning in these areas, research can be carried out on the internet, or you may like to visit the local library for extra reading. You might find some of the following websites a good starting point.

In Year 3 we encourage the children to read every day and talk about what they have read. You can ask questions about the setting, characters, about the story, and to check their understanding.

Where does the story take place? Can you describe the place in your own words? Which part of the story best describes the setting?

Who are the different characters in the book? Who is the main character? Is the main character like someone you know? How?

Can you describe what has happened so far? What do you think will happen next? Can you think of another story which has a similar theme?

Can you explain why…?
Why do you think the author decided to …?
Why did the author choose this setting?

What is your opinion on…?
What makes this a good story?
How could this story be improved?

Learning times tables are part of our ongoing learning in Year 3. Your child should already know their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will be learning the rest over the course of the year. You could play games to reinforce their learning.
